there's a great article in last week's New York Magazine about the spa industry in New York city. it discussed the terrible working conditions of manicurists and then contrasted that with the growing demand for 'emotional labour' by cold cold middle/upper class women.

Nothing I love more than drop kicks wasting time pontificating thinking they are very witty, when they actually could be doing some good, like raising awareness about such a cause, or seeing what they could do to help these women. Or doing all of us some good, and dropping dead.
No one would go near your hairy, sausage-toed feet, with mouldy toenails and faded glitter polish from nights out trying to get laid, except for each other.

Thank you for the insight, Dot! But I had already read the article ... you should really check out all the comments. There is a huge difference between a cheap nail salon and a spa, a line that is somewhat blurred in the article.
I always tip well ... the doorman, the driver, and of course the manicurist. Life really is difficult for us cold middle/upper class women.
so JB... do you want us to 'drop dead' or to 'keep the comments coming'? i'm confused. i can't imagine how confused you must be, up there in that hollow, hollow space.
